UMSINSI – THE NGUNI SCARLET TREE

Flowering trees don’t just bloom in Spring in coastal KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

“Umsinsi/Umsintsi Wokuzimilela” which means “that grows on its own” in IsiZulu and IsiXhosa blooms beautiful scarlet-coloured flowers from Winter through to Spring, which add some life to a rather dull looking season.

This gorgeous tree is also associated with Zulu royalty, with these trees being planted on the graves of Zulu Chiefs, and also used as a fence around kraals.
