Afeni was a political activist, a member of the Black Panther Party, a philanthropist and a music businesswoman, who kept Tupac’s music alive after he passed away.

In April 1969, Afeni was arrested on charges of conspiring with other Black Panthers to carry out bombings in New York. After reading Fidel Castro’s “History Will Absolve Me”, Shakur chose to represent herself and the other accused Panthers. She was pregnant with Tupac while on trial and faced a 300-year jail sentence. She interviewed witnesses and argued in court. She and the other Panthers were acquitted in May 1971 after an eight-month trial. Tupac was born on June 16, 1971.

Danai Gurira speaks four languages: French, Shona, Xhosa, and English. She has taught playwriting and acting in Liberia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

“There’s so much we don’t know about how our freedoms were fought for. There’s a whole other corner of our history that I don’t think has been celebrated or explored. There’s a lot of shoulders that we stand on that we don’t recognize and realize.”

– Danai Gurira
