Comrades Marathon 2016

On Sunday, 29 May 2016, South Africa came to a stand still. Most South Africans dropped everything to focus on the 2016 Comrades Marathon, “The Ultimate Human Race”. Some stood at the roadsides to cheer for the athletes as they passed by. Some gathered at restaurants and sport bars to watch the Marathon. Some waited at the finish line to congratulate the athletes. Some [like me], watched the Marathon from the comfort of our homes.

The 91st edition of the Comrades Marathon began at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and ended at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban. It was 89 kilometres long.

The 2016 Comrades Marathon was won by David Gatebe. He finished in five hours, 18 minutes and 19 seconds, breaking the existing record of five hours, 19 minutes and 49 seconds. Ludwick Mamabolo came in second place. Third place was Bongumusa Mthembu.

Charné Bosman won the Women’s Race with a time of six hours, 26 minutes and 26 seconds. She was followed by Caroline Wöstmann. Third place was Kajsa Berg.

The Comrades Marathon is not only reserved for professional athletes. People from all walks of life participate in the Marathon for different reasons. Some do it for fun. Some do it to challenge themselves. And some do it to create awareness about a particular cause.

“CONGRATS to all the athletes that participated in the Comrades Marathon 2016! It truly is the Ultimate Human Race.” – Leandri Van Vuuren
