Doors, Or Works Of Art?

Doors in West Africa are more than a barrier for keeping unwanted elements from entering the home. They are works of art. The intricately carved doors usually reflect the environment of that particular area, like their way of life, animals, rulers and beliefs. Some doors are sacred. Dogon doors are usually embellished with figures and sacred images that communicate symbolic messages, invoking spirits or deities for protection and making the door sacrosanct.

    • I love it too. I also love “PALACE COURTYARD DOOR CARVED WITH HIGH RELIEF FIGURES DEPICTING PALM WINE TAPPERS AND OTHER SCENES OF VILLAGE LIFE BY YORUBA MASTER CARVER OLOWE OF ISE CA 1916 – 1918”.
