Yaa-Asantewa

Queen Yaa Asantewaa, was the Queen Mother of the Ashanti people, and the gatekeeper of the Sika ‘dwar (“Golden Stool”). The Sika ‘dwar is the royal and divine throne of the Ashanti people. It is believed to house the spirit of the Ashanti nation, living, dead and yet to be born. Queen Yaa Asantewaa led the Ashanti resistance against British colonial rule in Ghana. She succeeded in the short run, but the Ashanti were heavily outgunned.
